Privacy policy

Last updated: November 5, 2026

This policy explains how the Instant Preview Chrome extension (“the extension”) handles user data. Instant Preview is developed by Askar Yusupov (“we”, “us”). It applies to the extension published on the Chrome Web Store .

Summary

  • Instant Preview opens links in Chrome’s side panel. Everything it needs to do that happens in your browser.
  • The extension sends pseudonymous usage statistics to Google Analytics through our relay on Cloudflare. These include the website names (domains) involved in a preview, but never full web addresses, page content, or anything that identifies you by name.
  • We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with anyone except Google, which provides the analytics, form, and sync services, and Cloudflare, which hosts our analytics relay, as described below.

Data handled on your device

To provide previews, the extension processes the following data locally in Chrome:

  • Links you choose to preview. The extension reads the address of the link you right-click, hover, or long-click so it can open that address in the side panel.
  • Mouse activity on web pages. The extension listens for pointer movement and clicks on web pages only to detect the preview trigger you selected (for example, hover or long click). Pointer positions are not stored or sent anywhere.
  • The address of the previewed page. When a page opens in the side panel, the extension reads that page’s canonical address (its canonical link or og:url tag) to show the correct final page. It does not read other page content.
  • Your settings. Your preview trigger and delays are saved with Chrome’s storage sync. If Chrome Sync is turned on, Google syncs them to your other Chrome browsers signed in to the same Google Account.
  • Rating prompt state. A count of previews, your star rating (if you give one), and when the prompt was last shown, so the prompt appears rarely and respects your answer.
  • Analytics identifiers. A random identifier created when the extension is installed, and a session identifier that expires after 30 minutes of inactivity (see below). Usage events waiting to be sent are kept in Chrome’s session storage, which is cleared when Chrome closes.

This data stays in your browser except as described in the next sections.

Pages you preview

Chrome loads a previewed page directly from its website, in the same way as opening the link in a tab. That website receives your request and may use its own cookies and analytics under its own privacy policy. The extension does not change, read, or collect the content of pages you preview, apart from the canonical address described above.

Usage analytics (Google Analytics)

The extension sends usage events over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our analytics relay at analytics.instantpreview.app, which runs on Cloudflare Workers and forwards them to Google Analytics 4. We use them to count installs and updates, see which preview triggers and settings people use, understand which kinds of sites and file types are previewed so we can improve compatibility, and find and fix errors.

EventWhen it is sentData sent
Install or updateThe extension is installed or updatedWhether it was an install or update, the previous version, and how it was installed (for example, from the Chrome Web Store)
Preview openedYou open a previewThe trigger you used, the domain of the page you were on, the domain of the linked page, and the file extension of the link (for example, pdf)
Settings changedYou change the preview trigger in OptionsThe selected trigger, its delays, and the popover position
Options openedYou open the Options pageThe Options page title and its internal extension address
ErrorAn error occurs in the extensionWhere it happened, the error type, and a short error message, which may occasionally include part of a web address

Every event also includes the random installation identifier, the session identifier, the extension version, and your Chrome interface language. Events are sent together in batches. Text values are shortened to at most 100 characters. The relay adds your IP address, so that Google can estimate your approximate location, and your browser’s user agent string (browser and operating system name and version), so that Google can report device type.

The extension never sends full web addresses (paths or query strings), page titles or content of websites, form entries, keystrokes, cookies, passwords, your browsing history, or your name, email address, or Google Account.

Cloudflare receives your IP address, as it does with any internet request. The relay passes your IP address and your browser’s user agent string to Google Analytics so that Google can estimate your approximate location and report device type, and the relay does not store IP addresses or events. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses ( Google’s explanation ). Cloudflare processes this data as our service provider under the Cloudflare Privacy Policy . Google processes analytics data as our service provider. See how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy .

Feedback and uninstall surveys

  • After you have used the extension for a while, the side panel may ask you to rate it. Choosing 4 or 5 stars opens the Instant Preview reviews page on the Chrome Web Store. Choosing 1 to 3 stars opens a Google Forms survey with your star rating and the extension version filled in. Choosing Not now closes the prompt and sends nothing.
  • When you uninstall the extension, Chrome opens a short Google Forms survey with the extension version filled in.

Nothing is submitted unless you choose to send the survey or post a review. Survey answers are stored by Google Forms and read by us to improve the extension. Reviews follow the Chrome Web Store’s own terms. Please do not include personal information in a survey unless you want us to reply.

How data is shared

We share data only with Google, as the provider of Google Analytics, Google Forms, Chrome storage sync, and the Chrome Web Store, and with Cloudflare, which hosts our analytics relay. We do not sell or rent user data. We do not use or transfer it for personalized advertising, to determine creditworthiness, or for lending. We do not give it to data brokers. We may disclose data only if needed to comply with the law, to protect the security of users or the extension, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

The use of information received from the Instant Preview extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy , including the Limited Use requirements. We use data only to provide and improve the extension’s link preview feature. We do not allow humans to read user data, except aggregated, anonymized statistics used for internal operations, data you choose to send us in a survey or email, or where security or the law requires it.

Data retention

  • Settings, rating prompt state, and the installation identifier remain in your browser until you uninstall the extension or clear its data. The session identifier is cleared after 30 minutes of inactivity or when Chrome closes.
  • Analytics events are retained according to our Google Analytics data retention settings, for no longer than 14 months at the event level. Aggregated reports, such as monthly totals, may be kept longer.
  • Survey answers are kept in Google Forms for as long as they are useful for improving the extension.

Your choices

  • Change your preview trigger at any time in the extension’s Options.
  • Uninstall the extension from chrome://extensions to stop all data collection immediately. Uninstalling also removes all data the extension stored in your browser, including the installation identifier.
  • Analytics data is pseudonymous and is not linked to your name or account, so we usually cannot find records that belong to a specific person. You can still contact us with any privacy question or request, and we will help where we can.

Children

Instant Preview is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If the extension’s data practices change, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date before the new version is published.
